LSDB Camp “Creative Expression and Sensory Interaction” at Skangaļi Manor

From August 8 to 10, the Latvian Association of Social Workers held its annual summer camp “Creative Expression and Sensory Interaction: Effective Methods in Social Worker Practice” at Skangaļi Manor. Over the course of three days, participants learned about the role of a family support person, occupational therapist, and art therapist in the practice of social work specialists.

During the camp, participants gained valuable knowledge about providing holistic support to clients, the importance of sensory information processing, and methods of art therapy. A special highlight was a musical conversation with musician and social services developer Kaspars Markševics. The event also included discussions about the association’s future plans, including the upcoming autumn conference, scheduled for November 14 this year, tentatively focusing on social work in social care, including the topic of dementia.

  At the conclusion of the camp, the participants expressed the following evaluation of the event:

  • one plus one does not always equal two, in our field it is three, four and more;
  • conversations about dementia are an indicator of maturity, our task is to support and social workers are a strength, I wish to find a formula for strengthening myself;
  • I feel like a student at the camp, I envy how many smart people there are around;
  • a professional moment of respite;
  • what I experienced at the camp is like a nugget from which to draw knowledge and emotions.
