From August 2nd to 4th, 2024, the annual discussion camp organized by the Latvian Association of Social Workers

The event was held at the guest house “Rožkalni” in Puze Parish, Ventspils District. This year’s discussion camp focused on the theme “On the Boundaries of the Social Work Profession in the Context of the Latvian Social Workers’ Code of Ethics.” Participants had the opportunity to engage in therapeutic sessions with the “Creative Bread Laboratory,” where they explored a unique approach to self-awareness and collegial understanding through the communal process of bread-making, addressing various situations related to both professional activities and personal experiences.

A significant part of the camp involved working in five groups, where discussions centered on ethical standards in social work, including interactions with clients, interinstitutional cooperation, collaboration with colleagues, conduct on social media, and the overall relationship to the social work profession. The discussions focused on identifying the most challenging situations concerning adherence to the code of ethics and the common strategies that social workers use to navigate ethical dilemmas. For instance, one of the challenges discussed was upholding the principle of social justice while ensuring clients’ rights to self-determination and providing individualized care. As a result of these group discussions, proposals were developed for future association activities aimed at highlighting the needs and interests of client target groups, thereby promoting social justice.

Key topics that emerged during the discussions included the importance of delivering precise and comprehensible information on social media, the increasing incidence of dementia among younger individuals, and the systemic challenges in achieving a multi-level specialist perspective in out-of-home care solutions.
